We tested GeekTool on the most recent MacOS update and it worked just fine, but Mojave seems to cause interference with certain scripts. Recent MacOS updates have made some of the scripts and commands invalid. ![]() While GeekTool still has a strong, niche community, some people are of the opinion the application is on a downhill slide. Using ANSI color codes can make those scripts even more useful. GeekTool, Perl, and ANSI color codes GeekTool is a great way to display the results of little scripts on your desktop. GeekTool, TaskPaper, and XML A script to convert a TaskPaper file to XML so as to filter it for specific tags and display the results on the Desktop. Mac user Hannes Bretschneider posts a useful script for the GeekTool desktop overlay which displays the current month's calendar. You notice the script begins with two functions that do the rounding and truncating. (If you just want to round down to a whole number change the final line to round_truncate(officeTempF,0). The script gets the temperature from Hue, converts it to Fahrenheit, and rounds it down to two decimal points. Geektool works in seconds, which may be a bit awkward if you’re thinking in minutes, but if you want your calendar to refresh every fifteen minutes, enter 900 seconds. Too many geeklets refreshing too often may cause problems. If you find that GeekTool is causing your computer to run slow, check the refresh rate of your geeklets. When you’re done and exit GeekTool, all of the borders around your geeklets, which can admittedly make everything seem like a mess, will disappear. Geektool runs almost entirely on shell scripts, which update every few seconds to display useful information on the desktop. Geektool is a program for adding customizable widgets to your Mac’s desktop. Geeklets can be files, the output of shell commands, text or images. To show this informations you have to create a wrapper around these information called Geeklet. It lets you display various kinds of information on your desktop. The GeekTool is a small Mac OS application. There is some scripting involved, but don’t let that intimidate you-GeekTool really is easier to use than it looks. It grants the same level of customization as RainMeter does with just a bit extra work. GeekTool is the MacOS alternative to RainMeter. Should be updated to be more flexible (horizontal lines, how many lines, width/height, etc.). If you’ve tried out a few features on GeekTool and found it to your liking, the next step is to implement more complex commands. Specify an appropriate refresh interval, in seconds. Within GeekTool drag a “shell” object onto the desktop and paste the UNIX command line into the “command” field. GeekTool is a fabulously easy way of displaying images from the web and the output of UNIX commands on your Mac’s desktop.
